NORCO Composites, the Poole-based manufacturer of composite and GRP structures, has been working with luxury yacht maker Sunseeker on an innovative ‘hardtop’ product for the Manhattan 65 model, which has moved the bar in terms of the key parameters of weight and material performance.
NORCO and Sunseeker’s composites team started working together in 2015 on a set of carbon moulds that could be used to produce a high quality but extremely lightweight hardtop. Each mould, or tool, was in excess of 38sqm. The key to the project was the need to reduce the weight of the boat at its highest part, in order to improve speed and stability.
In total 10 fully engineered carbon epoxy prepreg hardtop’s have now been manufactured and delivered to Sunseeker, all achieving a weight of under 350Kg, some three and a half times lighter than an equivalent GRP product. This repetitive weight capability enables tools and processes to be engineered without compromising the structural integrity of the part, thus making it ideal for high volumes.
Mark Northey, Managing Director of NORCO, is delighted with the success of the project:
“By utilising our expertise in composite production, and by working in close co-operation with our client, we have been able to demonstrate that NORCO can deliver high quality engineered solutions. We have enjoyed an excellent relationship with Sunseeker for more than 30 years now and we are thrilled to be a part of their success.”
