Norco has welcomed local Dorset students for summer work experience placements, giving them a hands-on introduction to composites, engineering and manufacturing.
As part of the week-long placement, each student was set a practical challenge: to design and manufacture their own phone holder to take home, using processes and equipment found at Norco.
With guidance from the team, the students followed a full project route, starting with CAD and technical drawings before moving into prepreg layup, 3D printing or Shadow CNC machining, final assembly and a presentation to Engineering Manager, Ned Popham.
This approach gave students a chance to see how an idea develops into a finished product, while also gaining insight into the teamwork, planning and precision involved in advanced composites manufacturing.
Adam Smail a Year 12 student from Poole Grammar School, was among those who took part this summer, gaining valuable practical experience in a real manufacturing environment.
Reflecting on his time at Norco, Adam said:
“Working on my own project and being involved was motivating and fun. I also received a brilliant insight into the industry and how it operates.”
Ned Popham, Engineering Manager at Norco, said:
“Work experience is a great way for young people to see how engineering and manufacturing skills are applied in a real business environment. The phone holder project gives students a clear process to follow, from design and material preparation through to manufacture and presentation. It has been brilliant to see their confidence grow during the week and for them to gain a better understanding of the opportunities available within composite manufacturing.”
