Composite Fairing
Kratos approached Norco to manufacture a composite fairing for a new application requiring a lightweight, structurally robust solution, built to precise tolerances for aerodynamic and environmental performance.
Norco’s Solution
Norco delivered a fully manufactured and assembled GRP fairing, designed to meet strict functional and quality standards. The project involved the use of hand layup and resin infusion techniques to produce strong, dimensionally stable panels with a clean surface finish.
Key Deliverables
- GRP Panel Manufacture: The fairing structure was built using glass fibre reinforcement and infused resin, offering a cost-effective and durable solution suitable for the application.
- CNC-Cut Foam Core Kits: Norco used their in-house CNC centre to cut foam core kits to precise dimensions, ensuring consistent quality and accurate placement within the laminate structure.
- Integrated Features: Machined inserts and bonded interfaces were incorporated within the layup to allow for direct mounting and system integration.
- Trimming and Assembly: Norco carried out precision trimming and final assembly, including the installation of fasteners and application of surface treatments as required.
Challenges & Solutions
- Precision Requirements: Maintaining tight tolerances was critical. Norco utilised CNC trimming and robust jigs to ensure alignment and repeatability.
- Structural Integration: Special attention was given to insert placement and bonding techniques to provide long-term durability under operational loads.
Outcome
The fairing was delivered on time and fully compliant with Kratos’ specifications. The result demonstrates Norco’s capability in delivering technically complex composite solutions through careful process control and close collaboration with defence partners.
