Gas Turbine Clamshell Cocoons

Siemens Energy partnered with NORCO to develop IP55 rated GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) cocoons for their range of gas turbine engines. These innovative cocoons offer secure storage and transportation, keeping the engines dry and safeguarded against impact damage.

Previously, Siemens had relied on heavy, cumbersome bags that inadequately protected the engines from damage, especially during air transport where steel containers that weighed as much as the engines themselves had to be used.

The engineering phase involved light-scanning the engines using GOM Photogrammetry due to the sensitive nature of the 3D CAD data. Design was carried out in Siemens NX, incorporating additional service specifications. NORCO utilised resin infusion methods to create lightweight but high-quality laminate cocoons with excellent stiffness and damage tolerance.

The cocoons, equipped with a perimeter seal and a dehumidifier, simplify the loading and unloading of the engines. The design allows positional adjustments of up to 50mm vertically and 100mm horizontally, offering safer and more straightforward engine loading. The base of the cocoon accommodates essential components like the gearbox and starter motor, eliminating the need for their removal and further reducing operational time.

The Clamshell Cocoons are now in service, fulfilling the requirements to the highest standards and successfully passing dust and moisture ingress tests to achieve an IP55 rating.

This project highlights NORCO’s proficiency in delivering tailored composites manufacturing solutions. The partnership with Siemens Energy is ongoing, reinforcing NORCO’s reputation for quality and innovation.

With the cocoons in active service, NORCO continues to produce them for Siemens and their customers, offering a sustainable and effective solution for engine storage and transportation.
